PhrasePicker is a language independent, universal language learning tool. It enables to learn any language, using lessons with audio, generated automatically from free books. Lessons are ordered by their difficulty. You can choose the lesson with its difficulty fitting to your level of language skills. In this way you can read the literature and standard books from the very beginning of your language learning process, at your own pace. PhrasePicker will take a book in your target language and will transform it into series of lessons of gradual difficulty. The Individual lessons contain only those phrases of the book where words do not exceed specific difficulty. The list of admitted words is attached to every lesson for your convenience. You can use it for building your own personal dictionary, which can be used in the word-for-word translation functionality, supported by this application. The difficulty of words is evaluated in the natural way, which means, those words that are frequently used in the book are regarded as easy and those words that are less frequently used in the book are regarded as difficult.
How is it done precisely? This application takes a book that you have selected from your device in *.txt format. It will calculate the frequency of all words used in the book. The first lesson contains all the phrases of the book, in which only the first 100 most frequent words are used. The second lesson contains only those phrases where only the first 200 most frequent words of the book are used. And so on. With every lesson you will get the list of words, which were allowed to be used in the selected phrases. The first few lessons may be empty or very trivial - don’t be surprised. You can jump directly to the lesson that is compatible with your level of language skills. With each lesson, the content of the book will be gradually revealed to you, which is in my opinion, much more interesting than reading some artificial prose from the classical textbook of foreign language. You can also use the lessons to evaluate the level of your language skills.
Automatic analysis of the text is language independent. It is based on the assumption that phrases (sentences) have linear structure, they end either with dot, question mark or exclamation mark and words are separated with space or non-alphabetical characters. These requirements are fulfilled by many languages, mostly European ones.
With PhrasePicker you can make use of the following functions:

User interface and the compatibility with Android versions:
The user interface was kept simple and its design certainly deserves the name a “frugal design” in contrast with the “material design”, endorsed officially. Such frugal interface is easier to program, easier to use and makes application crashing less likely. PhrasePicker is designed and expected to run from Android version 4.1 upwards on smartphones and tablets. Portrait orientation is enforced. It was tested on Android versions 4.1.1, 4.2.2, 6.0 and 7.1.1 with some devices. The screen resolution of 800x480 pixels or higher is strongly recommended. This application was not tested on devices with lower resolution. The options for the user settings are minimalistic and their saving and retrieval is not supported for now. You can hide the application with “HOME” button and later recall it using “Recent Apps” button at the bottom of the device and thus preserve your user setting and positions of the open files.
